Due to popular demand, we are offering a fourth and final Everglades 4-Day Workshop.  We have already sold two of the five available spots so register quickly if you are interested!

The Everglades is vast tropical wilderness of over 1,542,526 acres, teeming with wildlife of all types and sizes.  Its wetlands and forest offer both breathtaking vistas and unmatched opportunities to photograph an amazing assortment of birds, alligators, and other wildlife.  The Everglades has the distinction of being a World Heritage site, a Wetland of International Importance, and an International Biosphere Reserve.

Join Understand Photography’s Joe Fitzpatrick on a journey of exploration and learning on our four day photography adventure.   Joe, a Florida resident, has an intimate knowledge of the vast expanses of the Everglades that only comes with years of on location experience.

During this workshop, Joe will guide you to the best locations at the best times of day.  He will share with you the techniques he has developed during his years as an award winning photographer, instructor, and workshop leader.  Subjects covered during the workshop include using composition to get maximum impact in both your landscape and wildlife photos, understanding how light affects your subject, how to control depth of field, creating panoramas, best techniques for capturing birds in flight, getting the exposure of difficult subjects like white birds right time after time, what exposure mode to use for specific subjects and lighting, and getting amazing sunrises and sunsets.

The workshop is limited to five participants and is suitable for photographers of all skill levels.  Our small group size allows Joe to provide you with plenty of personalized instruction suited to your skill level.  The workshop involves walking over fairly flat terrain and boardwalks.  It is not a wet walk.  Joe knows where to get incredible photos while keeping your feet dry.

The field workshop will offer you the opportunity to photograph breathtaking landscapes and a wide range of wildlife under a variety of lighting conditions. Your photographic exploration begins with an introductory gathering at the Quality Inn Florida City-Homestead at 4:00 PM on Thursday and concludes in the Shark Valley section of Everglades National Park on Sunday.

Workshop price include lodging (double occupancy), transportation during the workshop, and admission fees.  Meals are not included.  A 50% retainer will reserve your place among the small group of photographers who will participate in this adventure.  The balance is due 60 days before the workshop starting date.  Price listed is per person, double occupancy. Single occupancy $200 extra, based on availability.

Where will we be staying?

Our base of operations will be the Quality Inn Florida City-Homestead, 333 S.E. 1st Ave/US Highway #1, Florida City on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The Quality Inn is  a 2017 & 2018 Gold Award recipient,  the recipient of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award and Hall of Fame Award. The hotel is minutes from the main entrance to Everglades National Park. Our first day begins with a get acquainted meeting on Thursday at 4:00 PM at the Quality Inn in Florida City. The gathering will be followed by a presentations on successful bird photography techniques and sunrise photography.

How will we get around?

You will be expected to provide your own transportation to the hotel. From there we will travel in the Understand Photography Minivan.

What will we be photographing?

This Photo Adventure encompasses landscape and wildlife subjects. Everglades National Park comprises over 2300 square miles of unique wilderness, the river of grass, and is home to countless species of wildlife.

What skill level is required?

This photo adventure is geared to photographers of all skill levels. Our proven 5 to 1 photographer/mentor ratio allows every adventurer from beginner to advanced to proceed at their own pace. We strongly suggest that you take our beginning Four Weeks to Proficiency in Photography course if you are not familiar with the basics of exposure: shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

What will I learn during the Photo Adventure?

At every step of your Photo Adventure Joe will be at your side, sharing his techniques. Our ratio of a maximum of 5 photographers per leader assures that you will receive personal attention and allow you to learn at your own pace. We will cover:

• Which of your camera’s exposure modes is preferred for each shooting condition.

• Which metering mode works best for each subject.

• Using the histogram to improve your exposures.

• How to take advantage of your camera’s various auto focus modes.

• Composition.

• Filters.

• Advanced techniques tailored to your level of knowledge.

What equipment should I bring?

This Photo Adventure encompasses a wide range of subject matter from very large, the sweep of the river of grass, to very small, a dragonfly alighting on a flower. We suggest:

• DSLR or Mirrorless camera or advanced compact (bridge camera).

• Ideally, lenses to provide the equivalent coverage of full frame lenses from 24mm to 500mm or longer.

• For “crop” DSLRs & Mirrorless this means lenses in the range of 17mm to 300mm or longer.

• A circular polarizer if you own one.

• Tripod

• Remote shutter release. Useful, but your camera’s timer will suffice in a pinch.

• Memory cards, bring them all!

• Batteries, you will need spares. Chargers for everything.

• Laptop if you have one.

NOTE! Our National Park Service Permit prohibits the use of flash photography in Everglades National Park.

Include your phone number and email when registering. We need a minimum of three attendees to make this happen so please register early. Please do not make plane reservations until we give you the go ahead.

To register call or email Peggy at info@understandphotography.com or (239) 263-7001

We require travel insurance.  Please note, because we limit this workshop to just five participants, we cannot refund your money due to illness or any other circumstance.  We don’t have a huge markup after our costs so we cannot survive as a business like that.
